Joni’s work has always had a way of reaching beyond the radio, beyond the stage, and into the interior landscapes of the heart. Her songs are paintings, prayers, and poetic confessions. They reflect the open skies and quiet truths of the prairies, shaped by a voice both fearless and tender. The world has long celebrated her, but every new recognition feels like a chance for us to gather and honour one of our greatest living artists.
For me, the celebration is deeply personal.
I first discovered Joni’s music about 15 years ago; her “painterly” ways of playing the guitar and her beautiful voice range had me instantly hooked. I HAD to learn how to play her songs. After much study and time, I have only grown to appreciate her and her methods all the more. There are times when I am just absolutely stunned at the skill she has, especially from her early works, and I am so glad that she is being recognized worldwide.
As a Canadian woman from the prairies myself, Joni’s influence has been transformational. What began as admiration turned into a lifelong pursuit: to understand her methods, to study her tunings, to embody the spirit of her creativity—and now, to teach her music to others. It has become my life’s goal and one of the heartbeats behind The Last Living Shepherdess.
Today, I have the privilege of sharing her techniques with young women, girls, and learners of all ages, both online and in person—anyone willing to sit with a guitar and lean into the world the way Joni did. Watching students discover the magic in her alternate tunings or unravel the poetry in her phrasing is one of the greatest joys of my work.
So yes—Yay Joni! We love ya! May your music always live on. I can’t wait to see you at the JUNOs.
— Avi, The Last Living Shepherdess
The JUNO Awards have always been a place of celebration, but this year carries an extra layer of gratitude and reverence. Joni’s recognition is not only a nod to her body of work—it’s a reminder of how deeply her music continues to shape Canadian culture, identity, and creativity.
As we gather—on the land, online, or in spirit—to honour her achievements, may we also honour the lineage she represents. Her songs have shepherded generations. And now, those of us who love her are carrying the torch onward, one student, one lesson, one song at a time.
Here’s to Joni Mitchell.
Here’s to the magic of Canadian music.
And here’s to a future where her teachings continue to echo through all who learn from her.
