Canada has officially declared a new national celebration for those who give our country its sound.
Today marks the very first Music Creator Day, launched by SOCAN (the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) to recognize and honour the songwriters, composers, and music publishers whose words and melodies shape our collective story.
This inaugural celebration comes during SOCAN’s 100th Anniversary — a full century of championing Canadian music creators — and it lands fittingly on November 7, the birthday of one of Canada’s greatest voices: Joni Mitchell.
🎶 A National Tribute to the Power of Song
The significance of Music Creator Day was formally recognized in Parliament this week — first by Senator René Cormier in the Senate on November 4, and then by Member of Parliament David Myles in the House of Commons on November 6.
From this year forward, November 7 will stand as a national reminder of the creators who give voice to the Canadian experience — past, present, and future.
Joni Mitchell: The Heart of a Generation
It’s fitting that this day shares a birthday with Joni Mitchell, who was honoured this year with SOCAN’s 2025 Cultural Impact Award and has long been celebrated as one of the most influential songwriters in the world.
“Thank you for honouring my work in this manner,” said Mitchell. “Although I have lived mostly in the States since I was 21, I live part-time in B.C. I have always been proud to be a Canadian, and lately more than ever.”
Mitchell’s songs — from A Case of You to Both Sides Now — are woven into the fabric of Canadian identity. Her ability to distill emotion, landscape, and truth into song continues to inspire writers and musicians around the globe.
🇨🇦 Celebrating the Creators Behind Canada’s Soundtrack
“Supporting our artists means supporting our culture, our creative economy, and the living heritage of our country,” said Senator Cormier. “By celebrating our creators, we affirm who we are: a country that believes in the power of art and artists.”
Member of Parliament David Myles added,
“Music Creator Day reaffirms SOCAN’s mission to guarantee that creators of music in Canada are respected, recognized, and paid fairly.”
He encouraged Canadians to celebrate the day by reconnecting with the songs that move them:
“Sit down and enjoy your favourite Joni song, or a song by any other amazing Canadian, and honour the great musical creators of this country.”
🕊️ 100 Years of Canadian Music Heritage
For a hundred years, SOCAN has worked to protect and elevate the voices of Canadian music creators — ensuring that the people behind our songs are not only heard, but fairly rewarded for their work.
With Music Creator Day, that mission takes on a new national presence — one that celebrates songwriting as an essential thread in the story of who we are as Canadians.
So on November 7, take a moment to listen — really listen — to the songs that have shaped this land.
From Joni Mitchell to Gordon Lightfoot, Buffy Sainte-Marie to The Tragically Hip, and the countless independent artists carrying the torch forward, this day belongs to everyone who turns life in Canada into song.
